artistic statement
Annika Dahlsten (b. 1975, Finland) is a printmaker and specialized in stone lithography. She also works with three dimensional forms and moving image, especially animation. “In stone lithography I’m fascinated by the beauty and complexity of drawing, and the possibility of re-producing and altering something so momentary as a drawn line. Drawing with liquid ink is very spontaneous but the whole printmaking process is about building up the image slowly, layer by layer. I’m interested in that contradiction”.
She works with themes such as memory or solitude. Her recent study is about hysteria, the 19th century phenomena that developed into a performance of anonymity and disorder. Her focus is in hysterias contemporary forms, how the female body is still being controlled and restricted by the society. At the moment she is researching the repetitive nature of printmaking, which is in the core of the practice. The act of repetition is closely linked to performativity and the metodology of performance art. Dahlsten's theoretical research extends to her art works, where durationality is not just a topic but a method aswell.
Annika Dahlsten graduated from Turku Arts Academy Fine Arts programmet 2003 (BA) and Animation programme 2016 (BA). She is currently continuing her studies at Turku University in MA degree program. Her works have been exhibited in Finland, Belgium, Scotland Sweden and Baltic countries. Recent exhibiting: Sámi Contemporary at Nordische Botschaft in Berlin 2015, Backlight Photo 2014 in Tampere, Finland 2014, Sámi Contemporary in Luleå art museum, Sweden 2014, Northern Soul, Space Stationm 65 in London 2014 and 43 Salon (Inter)Nacional de Artistas, Medellin, Colombia 2013.
